Judges: Faithfully Living Out the Church's Mission
Monday, 24 May 2010 16:18
On May 30th, Trinity Harbor will begin a new sermon series on the Old Testament book of Judges. Judges tells the tragic story of Israel’s disobedience in completing the mission God had given them—to take possession of the Promised Land. Instead of claiming their inheritance, the Israelites became complacent in the midst of those whose idolatrous practices led them astray. Israel became content with their own sin until God brought oppression upon them to rouse them from their danger. But although God sent deliverers to relieve their distress, Israel did not respond to God’s grace with greater faithfulness to him—it was only a matter of time before they returned to worshiping other gods.
Sadly, the story of Judges is all too often the story of the modern church. Rather than living out her mission in the world, to faithfully follow Jesus and tell his story to the world, the church tends to drift toward complacency. When Christians allow the values of the broken world they live in to subtly shape their own values, they become unable to tell the story of Jesus because their lives fail to reflect that story. How will the church today respond to this danger? Will God’s deliverance in Jesus Christ lead to greater faithfulness, or will the church become tragically lukewarm and ineffective? In our series we will explore God’s call to continual spiritual renewal in our lives here on earth and the way to make that renewal a reality.
